Callum - We’re an Indie-Pop/Rock band from Perth, Western Australia. Will, Lewin and I formed a band (Sweet Side Effect) when we were in high school. In early 2015 we put out our debut EP as ‘The Encounters’. Soon after we met our drummer Oly and started performing live shows as a full band.

Lewin – All pop-punk from the early 2000’s, Good Charlotte, Blink-182, Simple Plan, Sum-41 etc. Listening to these bands at an early age inspired me to become a musician and be part of a band.

Callum – Jimi Hendrix inspired me to get into guitar. Music my parents played has also really shaped my taste in music. On family road trips we used to listen to The Smiths, The Cure and The Beatles.

Will – Music was my creative outlet. I took inspiration from bands similar to Callum. After joining the school concert band I wanted to join a more contemporary band and learn a new instrument.
Oly – My mum always encouraged me to learn instruments from an early age like piano and violin. When I started getting into bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Arctic Monkeys the drums really caught my attention.
As a band we’re inspired by lots of different genres. At the moment we’ve been very influenced by the production of electronic songs, combining this with more rock-driven guitars and groove based drums.

TID - You have released your debut EP "Things That Aren't Real" in March. What inspired you for this EP ? Do you have a favorite song ?
The Encounters - We took inspiration from our relationships and experiences we shared with friends and as a band. The songs are dramatized forms of these experiences, hence the title “Things That Aren’t Real”. ‘Green’ was our favourite track at the time we finished writing the EP. Since the release, ‘Sweet Side Effect’ has been doing well with fans it has become one of our favourites to play live.

TID - What are the bands future goals for their music?
The Encounters - Release our second EP and get our music to countries outside of Australia. We’ve never had the chance to tour as a band. Being able to play our music to people we’ve never met in places we’ve never been is something that we aspire to do.
TID - What are the songs in each member’s playlist at the moment ?
Oly – FIDLAR’s album Too, Miles Davis and The Meters.
Cal – Mura Masa, Love Me by The 1975 and Justin Bieber’s new album.
Will – Last Dinosaurs’ album Wellness, and Phoenix’s 1901.
Lew – Bring Me The Horizons’ album That’s The Spirit.

The Encounters - Tradiio has been amazing for us, Sweet Side Effect has four times the amount of views it has on any other platform we use for our music. We didn’t expect our songs to do as well as they have. It’s set up in a way that smaller bands have an opportunity to get noticed. It’s like a stock market for music that rewards you for finding the best up-and-coming bands.

TID - For people who would like to see you on stage, do you have upcoming shows ?
The Encounters - We have some local shows here in Perth throughout November and December. Currently, our main focus is on the EP. Once we release that next year we’re hoping to gig a lot more and play some new venues.
