Wilder Maker is the songwriting project of Gabriel Birnbaum (b. 1986, Boston, MA) a multi-instrumentalist and composer living in Brooklyn, NY. He has performed on stage and on record with artists such as Sharon Van Etten,Sixto Rodriguez, Jens Lekman, St. Paul and the Broken Bones, Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, DeVotchKa, Akron/Family, and SKATERS and his projects have shared stages with The Arcade Fire, Deerhoof, Dr. John, Gogol Bordello, Phosphorescent, and Dan Deacon. He has performed at Lincoln Center, the Bonnaroo Music Festival, the Kennedy Center, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
Wilder Maker's most recent LP Year of Endless Light (2013) was described by eMusic's Jayson Greene as "a remarkable album, richly conceived and remarkably, wildly played." No Ripcord called it "a multidimensional tour de force," and Folk Radio UK praised it for "an incredible breadth of vision that defies musical genres.” It's a record that both "demands and rewards careful attention,” (Consequence of Sound) "seamlessly blending styles and incorporating [Birnbaum's] own free jazz lineage in a manner that swings from impossible beauty to unspeakable violence without warning," (My Old Kentucky Blog). The band is frequently compared to artists as diverse as Bill Callahan, Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Van Morrison, The Band, and Bon Iver.
The band is in the process of following that LP with an EP trilogy entitled Everyday Crimes Against Objects Of Desire. The EPs have so far received praise from Stereogum, Consequence of Sound, Paste, Wondering Sound,The Wild Honey Pie, and many more for their "surgical songwriting," "crystalline harmonies," "poetics of beauty and terror," and "thoroughly original and twisted approach to songwriting." They've been called "deeply cathartic," and stand as the bands "first sure strides past hesitation’s boundaries."
The band also features Will Graefe (Star Rover) on lead guitar, Katie Von Schleicher on keyboards and vocals, Sean Mullins on drums, and Nick Jost (Baroness) and Wayne Whittaker on the bass. Nothing would be possible without their skill and generosity. Other frequent contributors include Elio DeLuca (The Soul Shop, The New Lights), Danny Mekonnen (Debo Band), Pete Moffett, Andrew McGovern (Streets of Laredo), & Sean McMahon (Workman Song, Streets of Laredo).
Birnbaum is also a full time member of the Ethiopian pop ensemble Debo Band, whose Sub Pop debut was one of NPR's 50 best albums of 2012. He was the ISLAND Hill House Artist-in-residence for February 2014, and will be aWildacres Artist-in-residence in spring 2015.
